The latest Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart week dated Apr. 29 to May 5 landed on an unprecedented 10-day national holiday break. Physical sales this week was sluggish due to fewer CDs being released than usual, resulting in the long-standing streaming favorite “Marigold” by singer-songwriter Aimyon coming out on top for the first time since entering the chart 43 weeks ago. 

“Marigold” leaped 4-1 this week on the Japan Hot 100, leading the streaming metric with 3,452,700 streams, up slightly from last week’s 3,440,720. Video views also increased to 4,424,180 from 4,130,462, coming in at No. 3 for the metric. “Marigold” jumped over Aimyon’s other song in the top 10, “Harunohi,” which holds at No. 3 on the tally this week. 

Kenshi Yonezu’s “Lemon” returns to No. 2 on its 64th week in the Japan Hot 100. The song continues to maintain popularity more than a year after it went on sale, with physical sales increasing to 3,598 from last week’s 2,963 and downloads up to 22,709 from 20,253. 

Yonezu actually has another song in the top 10 this week, having written and produced Foorin’s “Paprika,” created for NHK as a part of its 2020 Tokyo Olympics supporters’ project. The song performed by five children breaks into the top 10 for the first time since re-entering the chart in January, rising 16-8 powered by increased streaming and downloads. 

Last week’s top song, Johnny’s WEST’s “Amenochihare” leads physical sales again, though the actual figures differ greatly (down to 12,499 from last week’s 165,559). The song also lost points in the other metrics and falls to No. 13 on the Japan Hot 100. 

Anime singer LiSA’s “Gurenge” also continues to lead downloads, but is down to 25,642 from 61,344 and drops 5-14 this week. 

“ME!,” Taylor Swift’s new song featuring Brendon Urie, toppled Aimyon’s “Harunohi” from the top spot for radio airplay this week. “ME!” comes in at No. 4 for downloads and No. 10 for streaming, jumping 30-6 on the Japan Hot 100 and demonstrating the pop superstar’s enduring popularity in Japan. 

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups and audio streams from Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOX, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, RecMusic provided by Gfk Japan, as well as dHits and Uta Pass, and karaoke data from Daiichikosho and XING.
